This year, the city of Phoenix will commemorate World Refugee Day on Saturday, June 19 at Phoenix Memorial Hall with a special invitation-only evening of live dance, a musical performance by the acclaimed Pangean Orchestra, the works of refugee artists, and delicious ethnic cuisine. Speakers and testimonials during the event will highlight the 30th anniversary of the U.S. Refugee Resettlement Program, as well as acknowledge the success and achievement of local refugees.

The world premiere of the Pangean Orchestra was an event like no other. The historic concert featured the music of several countries and time periods. There was stunning choreography, breathtaking performances, and many world firsts. The performance celebrated what is possible when all cultures gather in a spirit of harmony.

Eric Zang is an avid explorer of traditional music from around the world, much of his experience has been within flamenco, as a percussionist, and in Middle Eastern music, playing the kaval flute and oud lute. He can be found performing with a variety of musicians from styles such as flamenco, Greek, world and jazz fusion, and singer/songwriters, primarily in Phoenix and Sedona, Arizona. Matt Wiser is the orchestra’s Pedal Steel player. Music has been a passion of his for a very long time. He enjoys performing in many diverse situations and finding new outlets for his instrument.

Katrina Turgun has been playing the violin for about 14 years. I have played through grade school, high school and college and it is my dream to play professionally. I love playing and feel so lucky to be able to take part in such a wonderful orchestra. The way the different instruments and people come together to make music still amazes me every time.
